DNA Fragmentation Testing
DNA fragmentation assay is the most important sperm function test.
DNA fragmentation assay is the most important sperm function test. The method detects the presence of DNA fragments using the most advanced SCD method. It evaluates the integrity of the DNA molecule, whereby high levels may be associated with:
- Age (> 40)
- Unhealthy lifestyle (smoking, alcohol, etc.)
- Increased oxidative stress
The test is recommended to couples with:
- Low pregnancy success rates
- Poor embryo quality
- Suspended embryo development
- Recurrent miscarriages
High rates of congenital abnormalities in offspring.
DNA fragmentation may also possibly exist in cases when the remaining sperm parameters are within normal levels. Special lab semen treatment techniques are recommended in samples with high fragmentation (>30%), such as isolation with microfluidic chips, as well as special assisted reproduction methods, such as ICSI and PICSI.
